Common Questions
Helpful Answers for Parents/Guardians
Choosing the right tutor is an important decision, so this page has been created to answer some of the questions parents often have before getting started.
Every child is different, and every family’s situation is different too. These questions are designed to give you a clearer understanding of how Guided Growth Tuition works, what to expect from online sessions, and how Lucy supports children in a calm, encouraging and personalised way.
How does online tutoring work?
Online tutoring takes place through Microsoft Teams, allowing your child to learn from the comfort of home while still receiving focused, one-to-one support.
Sessions are structured, calm and interactive. Lucy will guide your child through the lesson, explain ideas clearly, ask questions, model examples and give them time to practise. Children can ask questions throughout the session, just as they would in person.
Is online tutoring suitable for primary school children?
Yes. Online tutoring can work very well for primary school children when sessions are carefully planned, clearly explained and paced appropriately.
Lucy keeps sessions focused, friendly and manageable, helping children stay engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The one-to-one setting means the session can move at your child’s pace, with plenty of encouragement and reassurance along the way.
What age groups do you support?
Guided Growth Tuition supports primary-aged children from 4 to 11 years old, covering Reception through to Year 6.
Support can be tailored around early learning, key stage development, confidence building, subject support, reading, maths, English and preparation for the 11+.

What subjects do you offer tutoring in?
Guided Growth Tuition offers support in:
- Primary Maths
- Primary English
- Reading Support
- 11+ Preparation
- Confidence Building
Sessions can focus on one specific area or a combination of subjects, depending on your child’s needs.
Do you follow the national curriculum?
Yes. Tutoring is aligned with the UK national curriculum, helping children build understanding in a way that supports their school learning.
For maths, Lucy follows the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear and structured approach. This helps children revisit key topics, close gaps in understanding and build confidence at a steady pace.
Can you help with homework?
Yes. Sessions can include homework support where needed.
This can be especially helpful if your child finds homework stressful, gets stuck on particular topics or needs help understanding what is being asked. Lucy can guide them through the task, explain the learning behind it and help them approach similar questions more confidently in future.
Do sessions follow a set plan?
Session length can be discussed during your initial enquiry or consultation.
The right session length may depend on your child’s age, confidence, concentration and the type of support they need. The aim is always to keep learning focused and productive without making children feel overloaded.
How long are tutoring sessions?
Sessions can be planned in different ways depending on your child’s needs.
Some children benefit from a structured sequence of lessons prepared in advance. Others may need more flexible support with homework, revision, confidence building or specific areas they find challenging.
Lucy will discuss this with you during the initial consultation so tuition feels personal, relevant and helpful from the beginning.
How often should my child have tuition?
This depends on your child’s needs and your family’s routine.
Some children benefit from weekly sessions to build consistency and confidence. Others may need short-term support around a particular topic, assessment, transition or 11+ preparation.
Lucy can talk this through with you and suggest a suitable approach based on what you would like your child to achieve.
Do you offer 11+ preparation?
Yes. Guided Growth Tuition offers gentle and supportive 11+ preparation.
Sessions can help children build confidence, practise key skills and become more familiar with the types of questions they may face. The focus is on steady progress, clear explanations and reducing anxiety, rather than placing unnecessary pressure on the child.
What happens during the initial consultation?
The initial consultation is a friendly opportunity to talk through your child’s needs.
It allows Lucy to understand how your child currently feels about learning, which subjects or topics they find challenging, and what you would like tuition to help with. It is also a chance for you to ask questions about online tutoring, session structure and availability.
There is no pressure or obligation. It is simply a helpful first conversation.
Does my child need to be confident on a computer?
No. Your child does not need to be highly confident with technology.
As long as they can join a Microsoft Teams session with support from an adult where needed, Lucy can guide the learning from there. The focus of each session is kept simple, calm and easy to follow.
What equipment will my child need?
Your child will need:
A laptop, desktop computer or tablet
A reliable internet connection
Access to Microsoft Teams
A quiet space where they can concentrate
Paper and a pencil for working things out
Lucy will explain anything else that may be helpful before sessions begin.
Will parents receive feedback?
Yes. Parents can receive feedback so they understand how their child is progressing.
Feedback may include what has been covered, areas of improvement, topics that need more practice and how your child is growing in confidence. This helps parents feel informed and involved without making the process feel formal or overwhelming.
What if my child feels anxious about tutoring?
That is completely understandable, especially if your child has struggled with confidence or finds learning stressful.
Lucy’s approach is calm, kind and reassuring. Sessions are designed to help children feel comfortable, not pressured. Children are encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes and learn at a pace that feels right for them.
The first few sessions can be used to build trust and help your child settle into the process.
How do I get started?
You can get started by completing the enquiry form or contacting Guided Growth Tuition by email or phone.
Lucy will then get back to you to discuss your child’s needs, answer any questions and arrange an initial consultation.
